He accused his audience of killing the Son of God. The way some men preach today, a lost man might never know his condition. The first thing Paul did in every city he visited was to lift up Christ and set Him before men as their only hope.

And it is in Christ that all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are hidden Col. Thus, preaching is not merely sharing knowledge or teaching how to live but is also the medium for the powerful Word of God. However, the purpose of preaching is not one-faceted but multi-faceted.
Johnson sums it up this way:. Christian preaching has as its purpose nothing less than the complete conformity of every child of God to the perfect image of Christ the Son. Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ. For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me.
If your church were a ship, preaching would be the rudder — it's what moves the church. The preacher is not only a proclaimer but a persuader as well. That is not true. This must be the primary purpose: No matter how big your church gets, it needs a rudder as well. How do you help people change their character and conduct through preaching?
Understanding that this is the goal of preaching, I listen with new ears as I seek to become spiritually mature. I know that attending a church where this kind of preaching is practiced is what will move me more towards imaging Christ.
Understanding the purpose of preaching helps me more faithfully attend preaching because we all need to hear God speak to us and for the Holy Spirit to change us. But when I know that preaching is more than instruction, more than an exercise of the intellect, and is having a transformative impact upon my life, I pay attention differently.
