The Unintended Disservice of Young Earth Science

This book in combination with books by Hugh Ross and Davis A. Young leave no doubt that the earth is very old. The Bible doesn't report that the Sun revolves around the Earth as some once thought , and neither does it report a 6, year-old Earth. This book takes on the stumbling block of young-earth creationism, making an appeal to those who trumpet YE to keep it to themselves. It covers what early church fathers like Augustine believed, and the undeniable modern scientific case for an old Earth made by Hugh Ross and others.

I was surprised to learn that the young-Earth position was virtual history until Henry Morris revived it in order to refute evolution, thinking erroneously that any old-Earth position would necessarily include evolution. As more and more young people who have been brought up to believe the Bible says the Earth and universe are young leave their faith when they find out it's not, the truth in this book becomes critical.

I urge any YE Christians, especially those teaching our youth, to read this book!

This is an excellent book one which supports a Christian View that sees Genesis supporting an old earth and universe - this view supports a reasonable scientific view of the earth and the universe - supports that God is the creator as Genesis 1 indicates..

This is where the universe between 12 and 14 billion years old and the earth 4. An old earth of 4. The idea that the earth and universe is young performs a disservice to all educated Christians and in my opinion does not help at all to spread the gospel to educated non Christians. I was surprised to learn that the young-Earth position was virtual history until Henry Morris revived it in order to refute evolution, thinking erroneously that any old-Earth position would necessarily include evolution. Then what happens on days are progressive miraculous improvements upon a creation that already existed prior to day one. These Genesis days could be 12 hours each, in fact, which is Mr. More on this claim below. Thus, Balian contends the long-lag prior to day one in Gen.

Or we can adopt the view of Augustine in the s, Origen in the s and others in the early church who believed the yoms of Genesis One were indefinite periods. Or we can adopt the predominant view of the early church -- six commentators to just four who held to the 24 hour view -- that the days of Genesis were God's days. And God's days were defined by Moses in Psalm Balian discusses the Hebrew word yom as it relates to Lightfoot's and Ussher's hurried and unstudied claim that it refers to a hour period.

Balian also makes a novel argument to break the log-jam on the 24 hour debate.

What is YOUNG EARTH CREATIONISM? What does YOUNG EARTH CREATIONISM mean?

Well, it is not entirely novel. Hippolytus saw it first near AD. Balian says that yom in Genesis 1: Hippolytus mentions this about Genesis 1: And it was evening, and it was morning, one day. He did not say "night and day ," but "one day," with reference to the name of the light.

He did not say the "first day;" for if he had said the "first" day, he would also have had to say that the "second" day was made. But it was right to speak not of the "first day," but of "one day," in order that by saying "one," he might show that it returns on its orbit and, while it remains one, makes up the week.

Young Earth Science YES has promoted the notion that if one cannot agree on a young earth in a world that has absolutely no doubt that a young earth is false, then one cannot trust the Bible. The Young Earth project, by contrast, has never gained over even one notable convert from an avowed atheist old-earther. Balian's book exhorts young earth advocates to see their scientific project has never succeeded; has only weak or invalidated claims e. It covers what early church fathers like Augustine believed, and the undeniable modern scientific case for an old Earth made by Hugh Ross and others.

In other words, "one day" did not mean to incorporate a "night," but simply referenced the light. It still counts up to the "week" of days -- periods of light. But the intervening periods are not described definitely as a specific period of time, for darkness after the day was called "night" but evening was a name God used prior to creating the Sun whereupon light first cycled on earth.

An interesting observation by Mr. Balian points out that the contemporary 24 hour view of each day of Genesis has given rise to the following dangerous syllogism i. However, what do we do as Christians in evangelism if this syllogism does not hold up within Science? What if Science among non-Christians proves the earth is 4.

Our insistence upon the above syllogism as valid would require non-Christians to reject the Bible when they plug the evidence into our syllogism. As a result, the only choice young earth proponents give serious minded non-Christians leads them to reject Christianity.

Balian's book exhorts young earth advocates to see their scientific project has never succeeded; has only weak or invalidated claims e. The author hopes that young earth proponents will reconsider their view of yom in Genesis and restore the historically acceptable beliefs from the early church that are compatible with an earth far older than years, e. Thereby we can preserve evangelism to the lost on a sound footing -- a Bible they can believe in.
