I understand that it was done to flip back and forth between Sam and Mia, but I wish each of them was separated into parts because the chapters were super long and I like short chapters lol. I still enjoyed this a lot, but it would have been better if the events of the trilogy were fresher in my mind. Definitely recommend for people who like The Darkest Minds trilogy - especially because of Beyond the Night, which wraps up some lingering questions from the end of In the Afterlight.
Oct 18, alexandra rated it it was amazing Shelves: Jun 29, Lauren rated it it was amazing Shelves: I only read Beyond the Night right now because I read the other two before. The writing is beautiful and I constantly felt all these emotions that engulfed me all at once. This bind-up of novellas was truly beautiful and amazing. Beyond the Night cleared up so many things and everything after the series makes so much more sense. This entire series is fantastic and will never be forgotten by me!
Jan 03, Ferdy rated it it was ok Shelves: Mia's POV was rubbish, she was insufferable and dull, and Sam was no better she turned into a weak, uninteresting doormat. May 19, Pinky rated it it was amazing Shelves: When I heard that this book came out, I wanted to get it so badly.
I haven't finished Winter, which is part of yet another series I love. And I haven't got the chance to read The Stolen Chapters, my most anticipated read of ! There are so many books but so little time. I really want to catch up because I am scared I am going to be spoiled and I want to discuss the books with others. Everyone talks about all of these books and I want to join in because It was a great experience, and it is a really good read. But, this is a bunch of nouvellas for the Darkest Minds Trilogy. If you haven't heard of the Darkest Minds Trilogy, it is basically about a girl named Ruby who was locked in her basement on her 10th birthday.
Her parents believed that she was acting strange and a bunch of soldiers showed up at her house and took her away into a camp. This camp had a bunch of other kids who were all sorted into different colors. These colors represented a certain ability that each kid had. This camp isn't one of those fun summer camps, it was more of the type of camp where you might die any second if you make the wrong move. In order to survive, Ruby feels the need to escape and after this, her adventure will begin. I don't know if that was the best summary because it's been a while since I read the series.
I remember that it was really good so I highly recommend it if you haven't read it already. If you have read the series, I highly recommend you read this because you are missing out! It was an amazing experience and we got more from the world.
We saw from different points of view that we haven't seen before and we learn more about the characters. When I read about the characters, I was like, It was interesting to see how different characters survive or attempt to survive. Most of the nouvellas had me crying because of how sad they were, the suffering and pain hits you hard in the feels. But it was all worth it, we get to see the characters from the Darkest Minds trilogy and it made up for all of the sad parts. Even though it can be sad Right when I started reading, I couldn't stop, it was fast paced and it was hard to put the book down.
Once again, I highly recommend you read this! It was really good and you will be glad that you did! Apr 30, Valentina rated it it was amazing Shelves: I absolutely don't want to say goodbye to these characters so I'm going to pretend I haven't finished this book and that there will be more books with them. Also alexandrabracken you have this amazing thing.. Don't be proud of it u made me cry so hard I'll never forgive u.
Nov 20, Theresa rated it it was amazing. Alexandra Bracken is legit my favorite author. Her characters are phenomenal and her descriptions and style are amazing.
She can create such a fleshed out and colorful world for her readers that is really incredible. She is an amazing story teller. These novellas were so great, and this world she created for TDM has been expanded perfectly. Anyone who read TDM series should pick this book up, it is so so great. Beyond the Night Necesitaba esto. We will move forward as one, and in time, rise like sparks beyond the night. Feb 27, Vathna Dany rated it really liked it Shelves: It will grow as we bring others in, as we bring the lost ones together again, gather up the embers scattered from the same fire.
One day, we will ignite and create a blaze that no one can put out, ignore, hurt. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, click here. But these novellas were beyond perfect! In Time was my least favorite, but still heart breakingly touching. Sparks Rise was an incredible introduction to Lucas and I'm so happy we got to see more of Sam! Beyond the Night was absolute perfection!
An interactive film in two worlds. Hilltop Hoods and Google Play Music present Through the Dark. Through the Dark Lyrics: You tell me that you're sad and lost your way / You tell me that your tears are here to stay / But I know you were only hiding / And I just.
Seeing the old squad together again made my heart do a little 4. Seeing the old squad together again made my heart do a little happy dance. I laughed, I cried, and I didn't want it to end! Still sobbing over Cole and drooling over Liam. Haven't read these yet? May 14, Emily marked it as to-read. This is really exciting!!
I'm really happy she's writing that last novella I think it's needed. Nov 22, Drew rated it really liked it. A really great read! My favorite novella out of here is: Oct 27, Alise Readers in Wonderland rated it really liked it.
I'm giving away a copy of this book over at my blog! This collection of novellas made me realize how much I missed her writing style and how easy it is to slip into the worlds she creates. It also added some humor, which I loved! The same goes for the rest of the novellas. But I love it. The cruelty Sam experienced was especially hard to read, the kids in these camps face both mental and physical pain and it made me want to gather them all together and make sure nothing ever happened to them.
Hell is being helpless to protect the people you care about the most, and save them from themselves. Overall, I think this series of novellas really adds something to the story of these characters and the world they live in and would recommend adding it to your collection. Oct 06, Isabel rated it it was amazing. I had already read In Time 1. Beyond the Night 3. I don't know how to make this review extra special but I feel like it needs to be. This series is so important to me and I love it so much, but this is the end and as much as that makes me sad, I'm also glad that it ended with Beyond the Night.
It's closure, it's answered questions, and it wraps the series up nicely. And sure, you can get away with j Wow. And sure, you can get away with just reading The Darkest Minds, Never Fade , and In the Afterlight , but these "inbetweener" books add so much. There's a lot of questions about the world answered in these books, and a lot of other characters are explored. It's not like they each are a retelling of the three main books but from other character's perspectives, these are actual, individual characters narrating events as they happen.
Also, be prepared to cry. Shut the door to your room and cry your eyes out.
Happy or sad tears, it doesn't matter, anything is possible! I really wish I had more to say, or, more accurately, I wish I knew how to put my love into words. These characters are like family to me and I know that sounds so cheesy, but honestly they light up my day. Chubs and Vida are so funny, Liam and Ruby are just giant sweethearts, and Sam and Lucas have quickly earned their place on my list of favorite characters.
Mia, of course, is not left out, as well as Zu. They're all so perfect and I want to make sure that my review is good and solid because this is the last book! Is there an emoji for bawling my eyes out? Five hundred stars out of five, and let me just say that I'm trying really hard to think of books that are similar to these, but I can't. The Darkest Minds is pretty much the book I base everything off of.
I'm sorry, usually this is where I put, "If you liked [specific book], you'll like Through the Dark and the rest of the series," but I honestly can't think of a single book. Oct 15, N Yen rated it it was amazing Shelves: Apr 06, Natalie rated it it was amazing. As my best friend responded to this book: I cried so much reading these novellas. The Darkest Minds is my absolute favorite series that holds so many dear emotions close to my heart, so reading about my favorite people again and the people around them just tore me apart.
I laughed, I criiiiiied, and I just thoroughly enjoyed this. Words can't describe my love for these characters and their story, so just go and read it. Mar 20, Esra rated it really liked it. Aug 30, David Francis rated it really liked it. These stories were very good. However, I wish I would have read them in order with the books. This lady can write a gripping tale!
Oct 16, Chesca rated it it was amazing Shelves: It contains In Time , Sparks Rise , and the very exclusive to this bunch: This collection is genius! In this book, we get to see different areas of struggles for different people in the world of The Darkest Minds. In Time I think In Time is really short. It focuses on the life of Gabe, a young man who aspires to be a skip-tracer, who met Zu, a yellow, along his w Through The Dark: It focuses on the life of Gabe, a young man who aspires to be a skip-tracer, who met Zu, a yellow, along his way to search for kids to turn in.
What I can say was that Gabe is one of those characters that you would want to be in the main series. It would have been good to see him with a greater purpose.
The Aussie hip-hop group Hilltop Hoods were an obvious choice. Daniel originally wrote the song just for his son, with no plans to release it until one of the other band members, Matt Lambert Suffa , persuaded him to. The song touched such a chord that fans from across the country contacted the group to tell their own stories of cancer and its impact on their lives. This inspired them to create a new initiative, Side of Stage, that would give young people affected by cancer the chance to go backstage to meet their favourite artists. The outcome was a vision to convey this intensely personal journey through our most personal device: How could we convey emotion and empathy in such a way that the technology enhanced and enriched the experience?
With that as our north star, the team developed numerous concepts, finally settling on the theme of light and dark. In a literal sense, the experience of caring for someone with cancer is filled with emotional highs and lows, good news and bad. But light and dark are also universal symbols of good vs evil, hope vs fear, and life vs death.
From this came the idea of two worlds running simultaneously, allowing the user to control the journey for themselves. The team developed a prototype to demonstrate how it could work, and with that we were away. With the concept confirmed, the team began developing the exact execution.
Our goal was to give an emotional sense of the story without creating a literal narrative. We also settled on animation, and a low poly style: Similar to crafting a 3D film, designing the experience started with concepts for the character and environment before undergoing pre-vis approvals and finally putting the elements into production.
The team worked closely with the band on the character design, settling on representing the father and son as two mythical characters. Next, we had the challenging task of running this entire 3D animated film in the browser. Before we began, we agreed that for our own sanity, and to manage download time, the experience had to be under MB. We knew it would be large, given that it was 4. Designed in Maya, each scene consisted of the geometry of the environment, shaders, lighting, cameras, camera paths and characters.
Any characters with skeletal systems that had been animated had to be exported individually as Three. The dev team subsequently developed a configuration format so that we could specify a time interval, a COLLADA scene file, and where any characters in that scene could be exported at 0,0,0. All the offsets could then be stored and placed in the scene together to be animated and played as it would have in Maya. Or, at least, that was the intention.
My favorite novella out of here is: View all 3 comments. Designers, animators and developers brought the experience to life using the latest web technologies. This is really exciting!! Even though it can be sad I do really love the world created within those books, and I think Bracken did a fantastic job exploring this brutal dystopian world through short stories. This bind-up of novellas was truly beautiful and amazing.
The exporting issue was just one of the challenges we faced during the development process. Here are just a few others:. In one of the scenes, the user flies through a forest. When we tried it initially, we exported each of the tree models individually, which made the scene MB. Remember, our goal for the entire experience was MB. Our solution was to replace trees with cubes, each of which had their own individual position, rotation and scale. It was then possible to export out the three different tree models separately and, at run time, replace the cubes with the tree models, copying their position, rotation and scale.
This reduced the scene from MB to just 3.
