While both men struggle for control of the same body, they are drawn into events, since before the merger Lutt created a machine that could threaten the Dreen homeworld. The Dreens struggle how to handle the Earther threat. While Ryll and Lutt are clearly Jekyll and Hyde, the Dreens come across as a bunch of incompetent idiots this is where the comparisons to Douglass Adam's Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy come from. For example, rather than consider the "erasure" of Earth, wouldn't it make more sense to take out this Lutt Hanson?
Then there are the love scenes. I mean an alien and a human squabbling over whether to have sex?
Unfortunately, the end result is less than satisfaction. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. A very good, sometimes silly, book, completely different style than the Dune books but worth a read. One person found this helpful. Let me start by saying Frank Herbert was a terrific writer and his novel, Dune, was one of the best books I have ever read. Most of the other books in that series were also very engaging with Children of Dune being the sole exception. His other non-Dune books were also very good reads.
I own but have not yet read the continuation of the Dune series by Frank's son, Brian. Perhaps Brian is as good a writer as his father, perhaps even better. However, if Man of Two Worlds is any indication, I am in for some disappointment. This book reads much like the lesser sci-fi of the s and earlier.
Man of Two Worlds () is a science fiction novel by Brian and Frank Herbert. Plot summary. On the distant planet Dreenor lives the most powerful. Man of Two Worlds has ratings and 22 reviews. Temani said: Unlike everyone else here, I really loved this book. I have read it at several times of tr.
This book started off with little to keep me interested but I continued mainly out of my respect for Herbert the elder. But the characters were shallow and selfish with virtually no character development. The aliens were not well thought-out and alien abilities were added whenever the story seemed to need them. The aliens themselves were so human in their thoughts that they were alien only in appearance and ability.
I forced myself to continue reading with the understanding that, bad though this book is, I could write a review that would prevent others from wasting their time and money. With about a sixth of the book remaining, it looked to finally get interesting. Alas, no, the interesting parts lasted for no more than a dozen pages.

I have read it at several times of transition in my life. As an African-American growing up and going to college in the Midwest, the title caught my attention. I liked the character development, from that persoective.
Later, I felt that the Herberts were prophetic about the growing susceptibility of our political system and public opinion to manipulation by those with significant resources. There were also some interesting metaphors about the Unlike everyone else here, I really loved this book. There were also some interesting metaphors about the power of meditation and visualization. For anybody who's read Dune, they know Frank Herbert is capable of creating worlds and universes that are staggering in their complexity, economic focus, and mood.
But it's like Frank and Brian got together, created world s , chose a plot, and purposely melded a serious universe with serious ideas onto unserious characters. All the characters in this novel are flippant, arrogant jerks with a few notable exceptions. I did enjoy many ideas presented idmaging, spirals, ambience of a Fifth Elementesque world. But overall I would call this experiement a failure because Frank Sr. Jun 12, Mr. B rated it it was ok. A student read it and I'm into Herbert but this didn't do it for me.
An interesting premise but the characters never kept my attention. Apr 09, Cat rated it really liked it. Funny and a nice collaboration between father and son Herbert. Mar 12, Bruno Silva rated it really liked it Shelves: May 10, Ellie rated it it was ok. Both are injured in the crash, and they end up sharing the same body. The details of sharing the same body are pretty funny. Over the course of the book the Dreens try to decide whether to send additional Dreens to erase Earth, and the people on Earth struggle with each other for power and money.
There is a war between the Chinese and the French on Venus. There are something called Spirals that carry Dreen spaceships through the universe, and which humans are beginning to discover. There is the very strange uncle, the Raj Dood, of the guy who shares his body with the Dreen, and his wife Osceola, who live in a swamp in Florida but use the Spirals to travel to Venus regularly.
Overall a strange, somewhat humorous, but overall confusing book.
It feels like a half-baked concept in many ways, as so much is never explained or not explained in time to make sense for much of the book. And the end is confusing; what ever happened to the Dreens? And now the future of Earth lies on the two remaining Dreen left. Overall the book was fun but not great. Aug 09, Jason rated it did not like it. I picked up this book hoping to further my appreciation of Frank Herbert's writing, but instead what I found was a Brian Herbert book.
I read his book The Race for God which is a better story than this one but is still pretty typical.
