There are many points of discussion in this thread based on the quotes provided. I am not really interested in the last two, but the others merit some clarification if anyone is interested in pursuing greater understanding about what Nietzsche meant and not just looking for argumentative conjecture and speculation about what they think he was getting at.
By interjecting the word arrogant in your response it sort of puts a chill on any kind of genuine dialogue. I made no claim to understand absolutely everything Nietzsche wrote, and that is simply an erroneous assumption. What I will say is that everything that Nietzsche wrote is based on Zarathustra.
Without understanding what he was getting at as the core principles of Zarathustra, then understanding his subsequent writings makes them seem to be independent endeavors. All of his works have to be viewed as connected with and springing from Zarathustra.
Without fully comprehending the principles elucidated in Zarathustra, the subsequent polemics are misunderstood. Recognize egoism as fallacy! Let us start with this passage.
It is apparent that Nietzsche is speaking about the ego through the course of this citation. When he says the individual is a fallacy, he is talking about the ego in all of us. The ego is a perception, a con artist who has hijacked our consciousness. Everything about the ego is superficial and can be revealed with the slightest scratch to see beneath its veneer. The ego perception is merely a belief that it is real, when in fact, it is one of the greatest illusions we all embrace.
The ego is a program, it is a mind virus that has convinced all of us that it IS us, when in fact it is the greatest fraud perpetuated on mankind. As Nietzsche notes, the ego identity is simply a collection of perceptual beliefs that form a unity that does not hold together. The ego hides behind intellectualism and it justifies all of its beliefs predicated on assent to authority.
As Nietzsche says, discard the fallacies of the ego — these fallacies are a web of perceptual illusions fed to us through consensus reality, cultural identity, political identity and religious and spiritual beliefs.
All of these fallacies are the walls the ego erects to keep itself in power over our consciousness. The ego believes, the spirit knows. Get past the ego to find the spirit within and the fallacies of the ego will fall away as a snake sheds its skin. Nationalism I nothing but the group ego functioning en masse hiding behind the wall of nationalism to justify whatever goals the group ego chooses to enforce.
As he notes, it is public opinion, and public opinion is and can be manipulated through crowd psychology and propaganda. As such, it is highly dishonest, as is the ego is wherever it is operating. One more, just for fun and starting discussion. When self-interest is governed by the ego, it is usually unworthy and contemptible because the self-interest of the ego always has an eye to selfish personal gain. The self-interest of one who is working in spirit is not focused on the same gain as the selfish ego, and its value is therefore greater.
By spirit I do not mean mysticism or religion, but the higher level consciousness available to anyone who genuinely seeks it. This is what he means about serving the ascending or the descending line of life. The path of the ego is the descending path, the path of the spirit consciousness is the ascending line of life.
Defending the values of the fraudulent ego program never advances without a form of greedy, selfish self-interest. When one finds the spirit consciousness within themselves beyond the ego, their focus is on the continuing development of their consciousness, not the petty desires of the ego. Man is something that shall be overcome.
What have you done to overcome him?
