Towards Personal Empowerment

These secrets are not, by any means, new, but I hope that they provide you with an opportunity for reflection, for personal transformation, for switching things up, for changing the way you operate in your life. Most importantly, these 10 secrets are — as they have been for me — a call to action, a commitment to live a life of purpose and to continuously design a new future — one that leads to even greater success and personal empowerment: Take charge of your life.

This means having a vision of what you would like your life to be, and setting out to make this vision a reality. This means becoming intentional. Write down your goals as intentions.

10 secrets to success and personal empowerment

For example, I intend to buy a house, make a record, lose weight, start a non-profit, go back to school. Then devise the steps you will need to take to make those intentions real. You will take charge, begin making small and large steps towards your goal, confident that you will get there. Confidence, for me, is a state of mind, a trust in your ability to succeed.

No one is confident every moment of every day.

Some days you will feel more confident than others. Sometimes we feel low confidence because of fear — of failing, of criticism from others or of the unknown.

Empowerment

But many times we feel a lack of confidence because we are simply not prepared, or we may have experienced failure before. Psychologists say our lives move in the direction of our most dominant thoughts so watch what you say about yourself, and try to keep a positive outlook on things. Discover your personal brand.

Your personal brand is how you come across to others. Figure out what makes you stand out. Accentuate these attributes and communicate them. What are your core values? What do you believe in? Trust, integrity, honesty, keeping your word? It is important to have a set of principles that you live by.

These are guideposts that will help you to make important or difficult decisions, and will earn you respect. In other words, strive to be a person of quality, one who is respected for having integrity, being trustworthy, a great person who builds positive relationships effortlessly. Living a life of purpose and principles is essential.

At some point you are going to fail or make a mistake. You are going to have setbacks, feel pain, disappointment and loss. One account of the history of workplace empowerment in the United States recalls the clash of management styles in railroad construction in the American West in the midth century, where "traditional" hierarchical East-Coast models of control encountered individualistic pioneer workers, strongly supplemented by methods of efficiency -oriented "worker responsibility " brought to the scene by Chinese laborers.

In this case, empowerment at the level of work teams or brigades achieved a notable but short-lived demonstrated superiority. See the views of Robert L. During the s and s, empowerment has become a point of interest in management concepts and business administration. In this context, empowerment involves approaches that promise greater participation and integration to the employee in order to cope with their tasks as independently as possible and responsibly can.

A strength-based approach known as "empowerment circle" has become an instrument of organizational development. Multidisciplinary empowerment teams aim for the development of quality circles to improve the organizational culture, strengthening the motivation and the skills of employees.

5 Steps To Personal Empowerment

The target of subjective job satisfaction of employees is pursued through flat hierarchies, participation in decisions, opening of creative effort, a positive, appreciative team culture, self-evaluation, taking responsibility for results , more self-determination and constant further learning. The optimal use of existing potential and abilities can supposedly be better reached by satisfied and active workers. Here, knowledge management contributes significantly to implement employee participation as a guiding principle, for example through the creation of communities of practice.

However, it is important to ensure that the individual employee has the skills to meet their allocated responsibilities and that the company's structure sets up the right incentives for employees to reward their taking responsibilities. Otherwise there is a danger of being overwhelmed or even becoming lethargic. Empowerment of employees requires a culture of trust in the organization and an appropriate information and communication system.

In the book Empowerment Takes More Than a Minute , the authors illustrate three keys that organizations can use to open the knowledge, experience, and motivation power that people already have. According to Stewart, in order to guarantee a successful work environment, managers need to exercise the "right kind of authority " p. These keys are hard to put into place and it is a journey to achieve empowerment in a workplace.

It is important to train employees and make sure they have trust in what empowerment will bring to a company. The implementation of the concept of empowerment in management has also been criticised for failing to live up to its claims. Citizens would be bound to ask for substantially more say in the management of government affairs, production, consumption, and education [27]. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Personal empowerment is often represented as something we feel about ourselves at any given moment, as if it exists only within ourselves. Personal empowerment, however, is something much bigger.

It includes self-esteem and self-respect, but also includes our ability to have an impact on relationships and our social surroundings. This is why my Grandmother had personal empowerment. She knew how to have conversations that led to real changes and improvements. Recent psychological research suggests that personal empowerment is an interactive process that takes action, gets feedback, makes adjustments, takes further action, and attains real results. To have personal empowerment, they need to find ways to increase influence within their social sphere, both in business and life.

Either you control your destiny, or it will control you. It marches right on. While there are many things that lead to personal empowerment, one of the most effective is to have this mindset: I am willing to live the life I want. Dreaming of the future is a waste of time and is always an impediment to personal empowerment. There will be opportunities to think of the future, but always pay attention to what is happening in life right now. A goal is a something that you want and are willing to achieve. This is different from a value, because a value is something we find important.

Good goals are related to our values. For example, healthy living can be a value. Our goals related to healthy living can be a change in our diet or regular exercise. Bad values are those determined by someone or something else. For example, maybe one of your values is to get rich. That goal is not within your control because you are not in control of the stock market, the competition, etc.

Instead, identify a goal that will provide you with personal empowerment. This means your goal will increase your level of influence at many levels of social interaction. For example, if you run a business and face stiff competition, your goal is to win the battle. That is, you need to find ways to maintain satisfied and loyal customers.

If you run afoul of a relative or friend, your goal is to win that battle as well.
