The clueless Francis is particularly brilliantly characterised. I would usually be bothered by modern American slang in a pseudomedieval fantasy book, but it so perfectly conveys Francis's idiocy. I occasionally thought that Nina herself was a little fearful for the daughter of a barbarian raider, but mostly what she was fearful about was not physical combat but relationships and complex social s I really enjoyed this, in the Podiobook version read by the author, whose voice acting is remarkable.
I occasionally thought that Nina herself was a little fearful for the daughter of a barbarian raider, but mostly what she was fearful about was not physical combat but relationships and complex social situations. The ending leaves me wanting a sequel. When do we get the sequel, Christiana? Feb 03, Simon C rated it liked it. I thought the ending was nicely handled and there was a likeable collection of characters. Perhaps the biggest problem I had was that apart from the very start, Nina isn't especially merciless and the book doesn't seem sure which way it should go and how far.
I also thought portraying a character as a surfer dude just didn't work and became a bit grating. Overall, though, it was an amusing and quite original book. Jun 12, Marciealana rated it it was amazing. She's not a princess, she's not a barbarian, and she certainly doesn't need to be rescued. The plot twists are wonderful and a bit unexpected as well. The ending came all too soon and wrapped up a little too neatly, but left me hoping for more.
Aug 05, Nicole rated it really liked it. I was looking for a recommend and someone said to check out common license books, specifically this one. I thought the story was fun, it made me laugh out loud a few times. I'm pretty sure I've been asked by King Francis before, lol. I like the dragon and thought the ending was perfect. Definitely a good book if you want something light and fun. Apr 15, Ashley Redden rated it liked it. I thought a great deal of this book overall, but felt that the story dragged terribly with the dialog due to some of the excessive details of facial characteristics etc I also felt that Nina seemed a bit dense at times when she was portrayed in the story to be very smart.
Overall, a good story. Oct 30, David Henry rated it really liked it. Good story but like many books it ended rather poorly. Mar 18, Deoro rated it liked it. Cute idea and somewhat unusual plot. Light reading with lots of magic and dragons. May 31, Alan rated it really liked it Shelves: A fun comic fantasy novel. I reread this because I needed fun, hilarity, and a gripping plot. Fun, funny and original. I listened to the podcast from the author. Jul 20, Kimberly rated it it was amazing Shelves: I absolutely loved this book. It was fun and it takes a lot of work for the author to put this together. I think she did a great job and hope there is a follow up. I was fully engaged from page one and could hardly put it down. Would love a sequel.
Don't much care which. May 05, J.
Have to love a book that begins with a decapitation and just gets better from there. I'm not a big fantasy fan--more of a sci-fi guy then anything--but this was a hilarious take on the genre, an excellent book. Dare I say The Princess Bride of this generation? Nina Kimberly is no damsel in distress, though. She's on a quest, and along the way she found more than she was looking for.
Christiana Ellis has crafted, in her debut novel, a rich tale that is as much humor as it is high-fantasy. I see many folks comparing her style to Monty Python -- presumably because of the Holy Grail. While I agree, it is that much fun, Monty Python is more slapstick than satire. I would sooner compare her to Douglas Adams, but that's my take. But comparisons aside, it was fun to listen to as a podiobook, and I cannot wait to have a copy to read and share with my kids.
Christiana's take on the fantasy hero's quest take comedic turns in "Nina Kimberly the Merciless". What if the kick-butt hero is a 17 year old girl, and the handsome prince is a buffoon? What if she runs away from home, only to have the most annoying part of her life follow her - and she can do very little about it? And what if the fates of two peoples hing on what she does and doesn't do? And what if this story is told exceptionally well by one of my favorite authors and she'll become one of yours?
Then this story would be one of those rare books that you just HAVE to read! There is humor in the tale of Nina Kimberly, but it's more than just a funny story. There is far more than that going on here.
