A good closing paragraph is often short. While researching and writing your article, focus on what you are trying to say and say it fully and clearly. Don't introduce new information in the closing paragraph. If you've done your job well, there should be little left to say when you reach your conclusion. If you write a summary conclusion, keep it short and sweet. Three sentences should be plenty. You should answer the question your article raised in its opening paragraph by the time you reach the end. But it's effective to close with a new question which follows from what has gone before.
This technique works well online to encourage lively discussion in the comments. If the main body of your article has laid out a logical argument but not yet answered the question raised, the closing paragraph is the place to answer it. When your article is complete, you'll be eager to submit it. It's probable that despite all your hard work the article is not yet in a saleable condition. Learning how to write articles that sell involves learning to revise. Put your article to one side and work on something else. Leave it for several days before rereading it.
Then read it three times. The first time check all your facts are correct. It's risky to rely on memory. If your article includes quotations from another work, proper nouns and dates, verify your facts using multiple sources. If an editor buys an article and finds it's misleading or inaccurate, you'll never sell another article to that publication.
And remember, editors talk to each other. It's in everybody's interests you make sure you get your facts straight. In the second pass, proofread your article, which means checking spelling and grammar for errors. I recommend printing a copy of your article or changing the font in your word processor before proofreading. It's easy to miss errors in a text you wrote yourself.
Changing its appearance helps you see it with fresh eyes. Sub-editors will correct remaining issues, but it's not their first responsibility.
To make a successful career as a freelance writer, take pride in your work and make it the best you can. Read your article a third time. Use red ink or the delete key and cut out every unnecessary word or phrase. Rephrase sentences to make them shorter and clearer. Be as unforgiving and critical as you dare. Now put your article aside once more. The following day give it one more pass to make sure it's in keeping with the publisher's guidelines, reads well, is logical, clear, and complete. You might like to copy the following table and use it as a checklist.
Read the submission guidelines for your publication and follow them. If there's anything you don't understand, contact the editor and ask for clarification. Most publications today expect electronic submissions. Follow the editor's requirements for layout, font, and font size.
Editors may ask you to attach documents or paste articles into the body of an email. Check attachments are in an acceptable format such as. Some publications use online submissions portals. In that case, go to the portal, sign up, and follow the instructions. If you must make a postal submission, print your work on good quality white paper in black ink with inch-wide margins.
Make sure your name and contact details appear on your cover letter and the first page of your article, along with the title, your name, and a word count. Print a new copy for each submission you make. Nothing is more off-putting to an editor than to receive a dog-eared copy which has done the rounds. Keep your cover letter brief, polite, and to the point.
Address the editor by name. The editor will decide whether to buy your article on its own merits and has no interest in your biography unless it's pertinent to the article's content. If your article is about swarthy pirates and you are a swarthy pirate, you should say so. Otherwise, omit personal details. Likewise, when submitting an article, there's no advantage in mentioning previous publication credits.
The final aspect of learning how to write articles that sell is to understand the need for productivity. The more articles you write and submit, the greater your chances of making a sale. So when you've sent an article off, don't sit around waiting for a reply.
Make a note of the submission details in your records, forget about it, and set to work on the next piece. Sign in or sign up and post using a HubPages Network account. To be successful as a writer, may I suggest you might want to learn the difference between accept and except…. Shall we discuss your run-on sentences and improper comma usage? Both you and Susan should heed her advice.
My recommendation is Comp-Lab Exercises, a comprehensive and effective self-teaching system. Perhaps the course you took can enlighten us. Further, her writing did not diminish me; I felt it was absolutely unnecessary to write such a response to someone that was asking about global submissions. Obviously, the OP was not from the US or the question would have been redundant. Finally, I am quite proud to be a Canadian writer that has been fortunate enough to be in high demand. Tami, I am in agreement with you here. And yes- yadiya, I am most likely incorrect in my grammar use blah blah blah… Oh- and to DDl and Martha?
I have a dyslexic friend who has learned to write extremely well, and with modern-day grammar-checking software has several articles published. Thank God for spell check, and Grammerly. I write my own stories. My 40 gallon tote is full of stories in notebooks and synopses for new ones. Fear of the grammar police and editors.
Yes it could be changed, I could go back to school. We doth not speak as Shakespeare, because we evolved past the Elizabethan era of grammar and mechanics of writing. We are now going through another evolution which can be seen by newer publications that will publish, what you would deem to be, deplorable example of English writing. English is now about writing how you would speak, if you would pause in the middle of a sentence, add a comma.
I do not necessarily agree with the new method, but I do however understand where they are coming from in wanting to add more personality to writing as voice to voice contact is less and less. I do implore you to do some research about what is happening in the field you both have so much passion for and not sling insults at people as all that does is belittle your words as hateful and mean instead of being beautiful and powerful. You need not respond to this, which is only meant to be helpful.
I would guess that you already know what I just remarked upon. The problem, as I see it, is that so few people nowadays proofread their own words. Although I despair when I read spelling, grammar, or punctuation errors, I console myself with the mantra that the writers will never be published in The New Yorker! Also, this sentence…English is now about writing how you would speak, if you would pause in the middle of a sentence, add a comma…should read…English is now about writing how you would speak.
If you would pause in the middle of a sentence, add a period. I totally agree with Tami. A language serves its best as long as the listener or the reader understands what is conversed or is thought to be conversed.
Totally agree, this is great!!!!! Take one big ole massive breath and just type that ONE sentence you call a paragraph. She is experienced Martha , and is only trying to give you sound advise to which you take offense to? You need to dig deep and find out why your default response is in that manner. If you plan to school someone else on writing, try to avoid the most common error in written English. It sounds like Martha is trying to drum up some business for a writing product or course.
She might have gone about it in a more attractive way. She had to know everyone reading her comment would be examining her writing very closely, hoping for an error, and looks BobbyO has found one. Who honestly gives a shit about one or two errors, especially when grammar and punctuation had nothing to do with the original question. I guess we at least know who is who.
Martha, I agree with error-free writing and the prevalence of too many errors in writing today. Both of them are being childish in their response to one another. I belief every good writer has to be able to accept an give constructive criticism, therefore we keep learning. Except, I feel your response was a little harsh. I obviously did not give proper attention. I have a proposal if I may. Please write an informational article and share some of your skills as you feel you are superior in writing and I am sure all of us can benefit from that knowledge.
A good secretary can take care of grammar and punctuation errors, but it is much more difficult to create good writing. The mechanics and the art of writing are two very different things. I read through most of this conversation, and I absolutely have to agree with you, Shery.
Crafting a Good Article Title New writers often overlook how important titles are. Send complete mss no attachments, please to Emily Hancock, editor. Any work available or links? Heather van der Hoop says: Imagine your article is for a gardening magazine and your subject winter-flowering border plants. Be clear, coherent, and concise. The best writers in history, as most of you must know, constantly broke the norms of writing- not in the manner that they created their own rules, but use artistic license to stylize existing ideas in an attempt to convey and express new meaning.
The best writers in history, as most of you must know, constantly broke the norms of writing- not in the manner that they created their own rules, but use artistic license to stylize existing ideas in an attempt to convey and express new meaning. I used to worry so much about making sure everything was perfect in my writing before moving on- but why? Have someone correct your writing that knows your writing style. Many of the times I had my writing proofread, they ended up changing the initial meanings and expression I intended to convey, again, taking away the creative elements, making it something more generic, which of course nobody likes to read.
For the grammar and spelling quislings, you should know that nothing will throw me out of a story or interrupt the flow of a person attempting to make a point on any subject than improper spelling and grammar. There are innumerable books from which you can learn to do better. But a professional works very hard to minimize those, especially in a forum like this that has an automatic spell check program included right in the forum.
Susan, Do not let anyone or anything dissuade you from going after your dream. Write from your heart fueled by your passion and the rest will follow. Just as an after thought. When a writer receives a new job, it is very important to understand what is required and execute accordingly. When you get distracted, that means you are missing the point of the article. How can you do a proper job if you are missing the crux of the matter.
That is what I believe happened with my question and your answer, though I will take it as constructive criticism.
I would think that not having the correct grammar and punctuation could keep you from getting published as a writer. Come on people do yourself a service and proof read before sending in your article. It then might get published faster. She might not correct it properly. Then where would you be. Out of luck, right?
U mus b fun at partyz. As many have already said, great ideas and good writing are two different topics. Matha had no business putting someone down the way she did. Perhaps she will have a better understanding of what being picked on feels like. You should show some desency and apologize Matha. Hence, logging off and getting on with writing. You finally figured out the way to promote proper grammar and writing within the US education system! Troll the webs for erroneous comment mistakes and verbally stake your victims to the ground with your superior use of the English language!
You are really making a difference in this world. My children call me a grammar Nazi, and any misused word jerks me right out of that willing suspension of disbelief. That might be what happened. BTW, youse guys—usage ought to be correct in narrative, but the dialogue absolutely cannot be perfect. They sound AS IF manufactured twits. And try not to be so hard on each other. And even ignorance is forgivable.
I look forward to hearing from you. Writing is hard work. As writers we must remember this and command top dollar for the time and effort put into the art of creation on any level, whether it be essay, short story, or novella. Everyone is so triggered. Just smile and wave. She holds no significance in your life. As a proofreader I can agree with the sentiment, but you have to get it right yourself. And the high-handed tone is, yes, too much. Think before you judge. It was a comment for goodness sake. Face it, auto correct.. Please fell free to point out my mistakes it is makes you happy.
I was about to have a stroke before I read your reply. Although I do not agree with your views, I could not very well disagree with them either. My point…There is a correct manner in which to speak to others which is polite and thoughtful, and you will be more than likely to get your point across in a more favorable fashion. We all make mistakes, obviously even you..
Auto incorrect may be the cause of such errors. So next time perhaps you should seriously take into consideration, proof reading your own comments…Just a thought…. You talk a big game for someone simply commenting on a blog post. If you were in fact such a well educated and highly adorn writer, you would be doing just that, writing. Not belittling someone who was asking a simple question.
So keep to yourself. And with an attitude like that, you never will. The best bet is to check the submission guidelines for the individual journals. I believe a few of them accept international submissions, and submissions can be made online; you might want to check with individual magazines first, though. Hello Bamidele, How does writing for magazines and blogs work? Martha, with all due respect, get your head out of your butt.
Snobbery is dull, no matter how well-written it is. Dear All, I have read all the comments and I can find one or two typos or other grammatical error in each of the comments, including mine if you look properly. Well, this makes it perfect. This is absolutely how it should be. Either from the teacher, the pupil or the writer or the editor, you may find one or two errors, and it is just fine. This thread has served me well this evening; a much appreciated distraction from real-world events.
We all need acceptance and validation at times and not only for parking. No One is superior than another here. I DO know however, that as writers, we ought to keep topics as positive as we can. That is- if we wish to contribute, with our works, in a positive way. Be good to you,. Little language should not be a hinderance to your passion.
Thank you very much for this great post Bamidele, always a pleasure to read. Thanks for the post. I had no idea about magazines that pay so much. Thanks for this post, Bamidele!
