But we really never get more about what happened in Nova's past. Eddie is sort of like Nova's adopted little brother and I loved their relationship. I definitely would've liked more of it. Things ended well but it just feels unfinished. I really wish it was a full length book. She smiled up at him. View all 40 comments. I've always really liked Mathias and it's nice that we get an HEA for him. His breedmate Nova was unconventional and very different than the breedmates we've met in the past, I would have liked more, it worked as a novella but the potential for a more in-depth book was there.
We get a hint of Nova's background but not the full story, hopefully we'll get more of them in future books along with some of the new characters we were introduced to belonging to The Order in London. It has been fun to catch these 'in between' shorter stories of the Midnight Breed universe while I wait for new releases of the next full-length story. This one jumped right into a murder mystery and a fast paced romance. It was tense and passion-filled. This one was with characters that I don't recall encountering before, but its possible they appeared as minor characters in earlier stories so it could be read out of order.

Although, I rather had the impression that this one might lead into a future story since there was a plot thread that was left temptingly dangling. Matthias Rowan is the head of the Order in London. His team of Breed Warriors mostly clean out the rogues who prey on the humans and try to support the local law enforcement in the form of JUSTISS, the organization of cooperation between Breed and human.
There has been a spate of killings with bodies dumped into the Thames bearing a head shot and a tattoo on their hands. Except the latest body is killed differently and has a partially worked tattoo on the arm. Mathias and his men decide to check the tattoo lead. This decision has him confronting a less than honest beautiful and haunted tattoo artist that captures his attention as no woman ever has.
He must tread carefully as she may or may not be innocent. Nova is covering up a really brutal and rough past. She holds him at a distance and it stays that way until her vulnerability and fears that the darkness from her past may have found her again. She doesn't trust easily, but Matthias seems the only thing standing between her and danger. I enjoyed this installment as I typical due with this series. The characters of Matthias and Nova were engaging if not too deep.
He is a steady leader and lethal warrior with a sense of duty, but carries a gentleness and admiration for a tough woman who is doing the best she can. Nova is spunky even while on the inside she is barely holding it together after the damage done by a fiend in her younger years. Trust and opening up is a tough thing for her, but Matthias' caring and honesty break through her walls because he shows her that he is nothing like the male who raised her.
The plot grabbed me from the beginning. I liked these two together and how the trust developed as well as the passion. The mystery was interesting and was a good foundation for the action and forward motion of the plot.
The solution was obscure, but made sense in the end. Really my only issue was how quickly the romance went from a few passionate encounters to whipping out the 'I love yous'.
It's a novella and they did go through some traumatic stuff which formed a bond so I guess I wasn't too surprised about that. Looking forward to the next Midnight Breed story. Those who enjoy vampires, a brotherhood of warriors, and sizzling hot romance should try this series. Cannot wait to read more of Mathias and Nova. Lara Adrian definitely delivers with this short novella!! The key word there is "short" , it was too short for me, with a sudden ending, it sort of left me wanting more, but that is a good thing right? Nova, the heroine in the novella is a reserved but tough as nails tattoo artist, with a past.
Mathias Rowan an enforcer from the Order. But their paths cross, and once crossed, they cannot keep away from each other. Unfortunately their circumstances make them weary of each other. Lara Adrian manages to Lara Adrian definitely delivers with this short novella!! Lara Adrian manages to captivate and swallow your attention right from the get go. It's a great view of a world which we already know and love, and a slice of that world that has romance and angst, plus tender scenes.
Definitely worthy to read. I just would of loved, if the ending did not come so sudden, it sort of felt as if was cut short. I truly enjoyed this book and I was getting really into the story when all of a sudden it was done. My complaint is that it was short and I wanted more to this story but I loved what I read. He and his team of warriors happen upon a crime scene under the jurisdiction of the Joint Urban Security Taskforce Initiative Squad JUSTIS and discover there has been a string of recent murders, all of the victims with a unique scarab tattoo.
Nova is a Breedmate who is all too aware of the Breeds and what it means to live under their control. After being abused by her Breed family, Nova escaped her horrible childhood. It was Ozzy who took her in and helped her get on her own two feet. Marked by Midnight is a quick and entertaining tale from Ms.
It follows the game-changing events from the previous two full-length novels, but it can be read as a stand-alone. However, having knowledge of the entire Breed history and the Breed-Breedmate relationship makes it easier to jump into the story, especially considering how quickly Nova and Mathias fall in love. There is a mystery to be solved, and Nova is at the center. Although the problem is quickly solved, the story held my interest. There were a couple of other situations that I wish had been addressed and resolved before the end of the story. I felt like I was able to take a peek at something that could have been a great storyline and then nothing came of it.
All in all, Marked by Midnight is an entertaining novella for fans of the Midnight Breed series. The story flows well, and it is a quick read.
I look forward to the upcoming full-length book, Crave the Night, which hopefully will have more from Mathias and his new mate, Nova. Jul 10, The Author Visits rated it really liked it Shelves: Mathias Rowan has been introduced in previous Midnight Breed books.
Nova is the latest introduction as a breed mate. Rowan and his team of Order warriors are investigating a string of dead bodies that turn up in the Thames River. His investigation leads him to a grungy tattoo shop where he crosses paths with the reticent tattoo artist, Nova. Nova is standoffish and pretends to have no knowledge of the latest river victim but Mathias suspects otherwise. In an attempt to bait her, Mathias comes back for a tattoo and gets more than he bargains for. Nova and Mathias are drawn to one another despite their initial reluctance.
A tattoo artist with a dark past who has a connection to a group of dead men found in the Thames River and is a breed mate is stuff of good books.
Meeting Mathias is a reminder of a life she has worked hard to escape but their instant attraction is hard to ignore for either the upstanding Mathias or the ultra-secretive Nova. I am a huge fan of The Midnight Breed Series. If you are a paranormal romance fan, then you need to pick up this novella. I was definitely drawn but sorry to see the story end so fast. Definitely one of my favorite Midnight Breed couples. Marked by Midnight is a fun installment to the series,Mathias was a charter that was already established in previous book so was nice to see him get his happily-ever after breed-mate.
I liked Nova too, think they will make a good match. I'm hoping we might see more of them in future installments to the series. There was a lot of questions not answered we never found out why the other men had been murdered or who was responsible for Nova's early years and I think an epilogue would have made the Marked by Midnight is a fun installment to the series,Mathias was a charter that was already established in previous book so was nice to see him get his happily-ever after breed-mate. There was a lot of questions not answered we never found out why the other men had been murdered or who was responsible for Nova's early years and I think an epilogue would have made the novella perfect.
Hopefully future books touch on it and answer the questions for us. I do think fans of the series will enjoy this story. Except for the ending I really liked the story and loved Nova, Mathias and Eddie. I hope they are mentioned again in a future full novel! The ending was a bit rushed I don't mind the whole insta-love thing, certainly not when it comes to supernatural creatures who seem to sense their fated mate. But this was very fast! Mathias knows Nova for a few hours and asks her to move in with him and spend the rest of his l Marked by Midnight is a story about Mathias, a Breed male from the Order in London.
Mathias knows Nova for a few hours and asks her to move in with him and spend the rest of his life with him. Good to see that even though Lara Adrian has moved to self publishing that the quality of this kindle edition was good especially after the huge editing error in her last novella! An enjoyable story between London Order operative Matthias Rowan and the feisty, inked Breedmate Nova which would have been even better explored in a full length novel. Nice SS in the breed series. Especially liked the heroine but would have like to know more about her background.
Overall a nice quickie from Adrian. This was very good. But I really wish it was longer, I needed more Mathias and Nova.
May 01, Shelley rated it really liked it Shelves: I really liked Matthias in previous books and was glad to see that he got his own storyline. Luckily he didn't disappoint. In fact, I love him even more now. Nova was awesome, too, and different. I really liked them together. In addition, the plot was interesting.
It could easily have been a 5 star read. The only reason it wasn't is, because the story was too short for me to end in a believable relationship. It felt rushed, especially since it all happened within days, where the characters p I really liked Matthias in previous books and was glad to see that he got his own storyline. It felt rushed, especially since it all happened within days, where the characters probably spent a maximum of hours together.
How can you say "I love you" after that short a time? And want to be mated right away? I really wish there was a couple in this series that decided to actually get to know each other before jumping into a forever kind of commitment. I love the whole series, but this is getting really old and makes me cringe every time. I get that novellas are short and I don't mind it either, but there could be time jumps to show that more time has passed for the characters before they state they are in love, or a couple just starts a relationship and thinks it could end in a mating.
Mathias Rowan, the former head of the Breed Enforcement Agency from Boston, now a vampire warrior of the Order is charged with solving a series of murders in London. His Breed talent takes him to a tattoo parlor where a fiery breedmate ignites his passions and his senses. But as Mathias keeps coming back around and asking more questions about a dead man, the attraction between them surpasses her fears and trust issues. She believes she can trust him, until her talent shows her the murderer that has been haunting the streets of London and is about to destroy the life she so carefully built for herself.
A short novella bringing Mathias and Nova together in a quick passionate romance. Set in London, it introduces a new cadre of vampires away from the original group that started it all in Boston.
I've enjoyed the glimpses of Mathias we've had over the course of the series, so I had high hopes for his books. I wasn't completely disappointed, but there was so much to this story, I really feel a novella did not do it justice. As a member of the order now, Mathias deserved for his story to be full. Also, Nova's story is obviously complex and there is a lot that is rushed or just lost because the story is so short.
I hope piece of Nova's story that were left out come to light through another I've enjoyed the glimpses of Mathias we've had over the course of the series, so I had high hopes for his books. I hope piece of Nova's story that were left out come to light through another path, because she is a strong character and I'd like to see more about her and what demons she has in her past. Im glad Mathias got his own story. Good, quick little read. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers.
To view it, click here. Good story but I feel it was rushed. I understand the novellas are meant to tell quick stories of people that are not super important in the main story but it the wrap up was too quick. Unexpected Love Good book with a really great twist at the end. Loved that we got to meet back up with Mathias, Nova is perfect for him, just what he needs to shake us his life. It's felt like a very long wait between the last two books but I was able to dive straight back into this world without any problem. Fans of the series will already be familiar with Mathias and remember him working alongside the Order in Boston and I was really pleased we were goi 3.
Fans of the series will already be familiar with Mathias and remember him working alongside the Order in Boston and I was really pleased we were going to finally get to see him find his happily ever after. JUSTIS are investigating the murders of several gang members and Mathias has offered to help them discover who is behind the killings.
His investigation leads him to a tattoo shop where he finds Breedmate Nova working as a tattoo artist. He knows immediately that Nova isn't telling him the whole truth but what he isn't sure of is whether she is innocent and just scared or whether she is guilty and trying to hide it from him. He is determined to get to the bottom of her secrets and the closer he gets the more he starts to realise how special she is. I enjoyed Marked by Midnight but it is a fairly short novella so you have to be prepared for Mathias and Nova's relationship to progress at quite a rapid pace.
This doesn't usually bother me as much in paranormal romance, especially not in novellas, but I have to admit that even I found the declarations of love came a bit too quickly and that made them slightly less believable. I think I would have preferred things to have been left more open ended or for there to have been an epilogue set a few months after their first meeting to tie up their love for each other. I've always liked Mathias, he's a man with principles who is very protective of those who fall into his circle.
He is quick to add Nova to the list of people under his protection and nothing will stop him from looking out for her, even if it means keeping things from the Order which goes against everything he's ever believed in. It was interesting to see him a bit unsure of himself, he's not used to feeling that anything is more important than his brothers in the Order so it throws him off balance when he starts to care for Nova.
As for Nova I thought she was a really interesting character, we are given hints of some terrible things that happened in her childhood and I would have really liked to see this as a full length novel so we had more time to delve into her background and really get to understand her. I liked her character, she's spunky and very capable of standing up for herself but I felt she let Mathias get close a little quickly considering what we know about how she was treated by other Breed males in the past. Extending the story would have given more time for her to get to know him and for Mathias to slowly earn her trust.
Marked by Midnight is a fun instalment to the series, it's nice to get out of Boston and visit London for a change and I'm hoping we might see more of Mathias and Nova in future instalments to the series. I think fans of the series will enjoy this story and it's definitely whet my appetite for the next full length book, Crave the Night.
